Who's Affected?
Although, HIV is most common in homosexual men in Australia, from a worldwide perspective, heterosexual women are more at-risk of contracting HIV. This is because many women who have unprotected vaginal intercourse in poor nations do not have control over their sexual exposure.
The majority of HIV victims who contract the disease are people who participate in heterosexual sex. The second most common way of transmitting the virus is from HIV positive mothers to their newborn babies.
Statistics in the United States show that almost 50% of HIV positive people are African American males. Hispanic and white females were least infected. Overall, men are over 75% more likely to contract the virus in America than women.
People are most likely to contract and become infected with the HIV virus when they are in their 20's and 30's. This is because this age is prime for reproduction and the subsequent increase in heterosexual sexual activity increases the likelihood of HIV positive babies are being born.
