AIDS Awareness Campaigns - A Comparison
(then and now)
The way AIDS Awareness has been promoted to the public has changed since its first diagnosis, but it has retained its serious tone. Below is an advertisement from the early 1980s campaign that many Australians are familiar with, 'Grim Reaper'. Below is also a more recent advertisement from a similar campaign in 2007, which is more graphic and equally shocking. The purpose of both campaigns was to show just how deadly AIDS really is, and that it should be taken seriously. Both advertisements involve 'shock factor' tactics to sell the message of prevention.
